HYBRID & EV MAINTENANCE: WHAT'S DIFFERENT?

There's a common misconception that electric and hybrid vehicles are 'maintenance-free.' While it's true that EVs eliminate oil changes, spark plugs, and transmission fluid services, they still have many components that require regular attention. Tires, brakes, suspension, steering, cabin air filters, coolant systems, and 12-volt batteries all need maintenance. In fact, some EV-specific systems — like battery cooling loops and high-voltage electrical connections — require specialized knowledge that not every shop possesses.

Hybrid and electric vehicles use regenerative braking to recapture energy, which means the traditional friction brakes are used less frequently. While this extends brake pad life significantly — some EV owners go 100,000+ miles on original pads — it creates a different problem. Brake rotors can develop surface rust and corrosion from infrequent use, especially in humid South Florida. Brake calipers can seize from sitting idle. Regular brake inspections are still essential, and the service approach differs from conventional vehicles.

The high-voltage battery pack is the most expensive component in any EV or hybrid. Maintaining its health is critical for vehicle range, performance, and resale value. South Florida's heat is particularly challenging for battery longevity — high temperatures accelerate battery degradation. Most EVs use a liquid cooling system to manage battery temperature, and this coolant needs periodic replacement. Battery health monitoring, proper charging habits (avoiding frequent fast charging and extreme charge levels), and keeping the thermal management system functioning properly all contribute to long battery life.

Electric vehicles are significantly heavier than comparable gas-powered cars due to battery weight, and they deliver instant torque that accelerates tire wear. Many EVs use specialized low-rolling-resistance tires designed to maximize range. These tires wear differently and cost more to replace than standard tires. Regular rotation is even more important for EVs — we recommend every 5,000 miles rather than the typical 5,000-8,000 for conventional vehicles. Proper alignment is also critical, as the added weight amplifies the effects of misalignment on tire wear.
